On Shura-cracy, Gender and Equality in Islam

Whenever the concept of Shura is mentioned, attention goes very quickly to the Quranic chapter titled Shura, in which the concept is mentioned as one of the qualities of the believers and without any specification of how, when and where to be used. The second mention of "Shura" in the Quran which draws attention is the one in the third chapter (Aal-Imran), the historical context of which was purely political (has to do with war). This may sound a chauvinistic style of reading the Quranic text that clouds men from readily remembering the mentioning of the same concept in Chapter Baqara, in relation to weaning a child (I acknowledge a woman drew my attention to it). But I don't think this would be(more than partially) true.

The first reason is that the (most prominent) practical explanation of Shura concept through the actions of the Prophet (PBUH) in his interactions with the people around him was purely political and mostly to do with war. The second reason is that there is an independent concept in Islam dealing with the issue of marriage; that of "Al-taradi" (mutual agreement). This is a bit different from Shura in that Al-Taradi involves only two persons while Shura can involve many.

Speaking of speciality in the role of different genders which amounts to differentiating between humans based on their gender doesn't in any way mean that woman should be subservient to man. In fact, I always believe that no human being should be subservient to another regardless of their gender or sex. And when I speak about speciality in relation to gender, I am not using it to dismiss equality, but to establish the fact that the relationship between man and woman is complimentary. (I basically consider the relationship between husband and wife too delicate to be properly defined by the word equality, which I consider inadequate. But if we must use the word "equality", I can accept that they are equal but in different ways which means the same thing as they are complementary rather than equal. But I prefare not to use it for there is never two equal humans; not even of the same gender, not even twins) and which is quite different from equality before the law.

To answer your question, yes! Our physiological differences define our obligations towards Allah. It determines who among us is allowed to skip some prayers and who is not. In matters of finances, the witness given by a man stands for that of two women, while in issues to do with virginity, pregnancy and the likes, the witness of a single woman overweights that of men no matter how large is their number based on the text of and literature of the Islamic tradition. But the mistake most people make is to think of these as criteria for prioritizing a gender over another. It is purely a matter of speciality in a role not that of priority of gender.
Having said all these, allow me to state that I strongly believe that chauvinistic reading of the Quranic text is as dangerous as is feministic. God is not biased and never take sides.

Even the Good Book (Quran) placed a huge premium on women, as a complete chapter was dedicated to them (i.e An-Nisa), how complete is a man without the proverbial "missing rib". Any man in this age of ours who still view women as an acquisition to boost his ego is very much still primitive. Its even more clearer now that they are the ornament that makes the man a complete whole.

We see a very different picture in the Holy Quran that Allah makes it very clear that men and women are equal.
[ 3:195] Their lord responded to them : "I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female - you are equal to one another. Thus, those who immigrate, and get evicted from their homes, and are persucuted because of me, and fight and get killed, I will surely remit their sins and admit them into gardens with flowering streams." Such is the reward from GOD. GOD possesses the ultimate reward.

[4:124] As for those who lead a righteous life, male or female, while believing, they enter paradise; wothout the slightest injustice.

The holy Qur'an does not explicitly state that men and women are equal but rather states in 4:34 that "men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend from their means.therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedience and guard in the husband'absence what Allah orders them to guard".
Although the Qur'an does say this, the superiority of men is in terms of strength by the context.

First of all let me start by saying it is wrong to read any religious book with chauvinism just because you want to prove your are superior. In most verses of the holy Qur'an Allah mentions qualities, he mentions men and women together. Every gender is unique in its own way and we should learn to appreciate each other rather than struggle over superiority.

In the HOLY BIBLE, it was seen that after God created man he saw it wasn't good for him to be alone, so he created woman from his ribs to be his companion, friend and mate. Not from his head to be superior over him nor his feet to be trampled upon. Also the popular adage says behind every successful man, there's a prayerful and supportive woman, because the BIBLE says" he who finds a wife have found a good thing and obtains favour from the LORD". So there's need for gender equality.

This is a delicate topic with too many angles and perspectives which makes it too controversial. speaking from relegious point of view; The holy Qur'an has a chapter dedicated to women, defining who they are how they should be handled. the Qur'an reveals a woman was made from the rib of man. thus women are delicate and should be handled with care. speaking out of religious context one can say that women and men are complementary to each other and i personally feel that both gender equally need each other after all the "head cant stand without the neck" goes the wise saying.

The inequality between the two gender male and female in Islam and Quran does not in any way make my Allah unjust but rather proved him to be kind because in worship he rewards both gender equally according to action. He differenciate between them in the case of inheritance not only to tell the man that he is better than the woman by receiving a double share of what she receives but to tell him in a louder voice that he is the man and saddled with much responsibilities which includes being the head of a whole family of his own while in the other hand the woman enjoys the prevelage of being taking care of by a man being a husband, brother or any of her guidan and her share of the inheritance will be use by her in a way she wants.
